วันอาสาฬหบูชา

วันอาสาฬหบูชา  เป็นวันสำคัญทางศาสนาพุทธนิกายเถรวาทและวันหยุดราชการในประเทศไทย คำว่า อาสาฬหบูชา ย่อมาจาก "อาสาฬหปูรณมีบูชา" แปลว่า "การบูชาในวันเพ็ญเดือนอาสาฬหะ" อันเป็นเดือนที่สี่ตามปฏิทินของประเทศอินเดีย ตรงกับวันเพ็ญ เดือน 8 ตามปฏิทินจันทรคติของไทย ซึ่งมักจะตรงกับเดือนมิถุนายนหรือเดือนกรกฎาคม แต่ถ้าในปีใดมีเดือน 8 สองหน ก็ให้เลื่อนไปทำในวันเพ็ญเดือน 8 หลังแทน

วันอาสาฬหบูชาได้รับการยกย่องเป็นวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนา เนื่องจากเหตุการณ์สำคัญที่เกิดขึ้นเมื่อ 45 ปี ก่อนพุทธศักราช ในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 8 คือวันอาสาฬหปุรณมีดิถี หรือวันเพ็ญเดือนอาสาฬหบูชา ณ ป่าอิสิปตนมฤคทายวันเมืองพาราณสี แคว้นมคธ อันเป็นวันที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงพระธรรมเทศนาเป็นครั้งแรกเป็นปฐมเทศนา คือ ธัมมจักกัปปวัตตนสูตร แก่ปัญจวัคคีย์

การแสดงธรรมครั้งนั้นทำให้พราหมณ์โกณฑัญญะ 1 ใน 5 ปัญจวัคคีย์ เกิดความเลื่อมใสในพระธรรมของพระพุทธเจ้า จนได้ดวงตาเห็นธรรมหรือบรรลุเป็นพระอริยบุคคลระดับโสดาบัน ท่านจึงขออุปสมบทในพระธรรมวินัยของพระพุทธเจ้า ด้วยวิธีเอหิภิกขุอุปสัมปทา พระอัญญาโกณฑัญญะจึงกลายเป็นพระสงฆ์องค์แรกในโลก และด้วยเหตุที่ท่านได้บรรลุธรรมเป็นพระอริยบุคคล (อนุพุทธะ) เป็นคนแรก จึงทำให้ในวันนั้นมีพระรัตนตรัยครบองค์สามบริบูรณ์เป็นครั้งแรกในโลก คือ มีทั้งพระพุทธ พระธรรมและพระสงฆ์ ด้วยเหตุนี้จึงทำให้วันนี้ถูกเรียกว่า "วันพระธรรม" หรือ วันพระธรรมจักร อันได้แก่วันที่ล้อแห่งพระธรรมของพระพุทธเจ้าได้หมุนไปเป็นครั้งแรก และ "วันพระสงฆ์" คือวันที่มีพระสงฆ์เกิดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก อีกด้วย

เดิมนั้นไม่มีการประกอบพิธีการบูชาในเดือน 8 หรือวันอาสาฬหบูชาในประเทศพุทธเถรวาทมาก่อน จนมาในปี พ.ศ. 2501การบูชาในเดือน 8 หรือวันอาสาฬหบูชาจึงได้เริ่มมีขึ้นในประเทศไทย ตามที่คณะสังฆมนตรี ได้กำหนดให้วันนี้เป็นวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนาของประเทศไทยอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2501 โดยคณะสังฆมนตรีได้มีมติให้เพิ่มวันอาสาฬหบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญทางพุทธศาสนาในประเทศไทย ตามคำแนะนำของ พระธรรมโกศาจารย์ (ชอบ อนุจารี) โดยคณะสังฆมนตรีได้ออกเป็นประกาศสำนักสังฆนายกเมื่อวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2501 กำหนดให้วันอาสาฬหบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญทางพุทธศาสนาพร้อมทั้งกำหนดพิธีอาสาฬหบูชาขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทย โดยมีพิธีปฏิบัติเทียบเท่ากับวันวิสาขบูชาอันเป็นวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนาสากล

อย่างไรก็ตาม วันอาสาฬหบูชาถือเป็นวันสำคัญที่กำหนดให้กับวันหยุดของรัฐเพียงแต่ในประเทศไทยเท่านั้น ส่วนในต่างประเทศที่นับถือพุทธศาสนานิกายเถรวาทอื่น ๆ ยังไม่ได้ให้ความสำคัญกับวันอาสาฬหบูชาเทียบเท่ากับวันวิสาขบูชา
